Departmental Visit: Medical

Mission: Sentience
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD 1 || 1230 hours

Terry stopped by his new office to grab a PADD for his visit to Medical. The Sickbay was first on his list of departmental visits and reviews. Part of it was because he wanted to see this new scanner that the Captain had mentioned. And if he were lucky, he might get to see it in action.

As the doors to sickbay slid open, Commander Walsh stepped inside and scanned the area.

Having been expecting him to show up at any time, Jayla of course spotted him the instant he entered Sock Bay and an easy grin spread across her face as she approached. “Commander,” she greeted him. “Congratulations again on the promotion.”

Terry saw Jayla approaching and smiling. Doc always seemed to be smiling, which was a decent indicator to him that things were beginning to get back to normal. Ships seemed to have mainstays; perky crew members, obnoxious chefs, and even a gossiping barber. Doctor Jayla Kij and her smile seemed to be the Black Hawk's. "Thanks. To you as well, a hearty congratulations."

"Thanks," said Jayla with a shrug. "I'm not really concerned with rank. As long as they don't try to take me out of Sick Bay, I don't care if I'm ensign or Admiral. It's all the same to me."

Terry nodded and smiled. "Then don't let them take you out. Speaking of Sickbay, would you care to show me around? I haven't been down here except for medical reasons and now, well, I need to familiarize myself with the departments. Feel free to toss up any requests for things you might need. And, have you had a chance to test out that new scanner? If not, I can think of a volunteer."

"I haven't, actually," she replied, leading him further into Sick Bay. "I was considering conscripting one of the nurses and testing it out when we've got a few spare minutes. It's right over here, though," she announced, leading him into a small room. "The patient lies here, and the scanner runs of them and then it's displayed right up here," she motioned to an area about the cot, "and you can move things around to look at what you need. Apparently you just grab the holograms and pull them away. It's gonna be a little weird to just pull someone's colon away, but also useful, if it's in the way."

Terry followed and then watched as Jayla explained the new scanner to him. "It all sounds pretty amazing. But I can't imagine the weirdness of simply removing a colon." He paused and chuckled. "I'd be willing to lay down and give it a shot if you'll run it up. Or, do I need to lay down first?"

"You lie down, I'll turn it on," she instructed. She turned to the nearby console and tapped a few buttons. Lights popped on as it whirred to life. Jayla grinned excitedly just watching it warm up. "Ready?" she asked.

Terry climbed up on the bed and laid down. "This is going to be interesting, seeing my insides and what-not. Heh, I guess this can count as my yearly physical, too."

"It certainly can," Jayla replied, tapping a few buttons on the console. "This thing will tell me a lot more than a regular physical would. Now just lie still for a moment," she added as the machine began whirring into place.

Terry was as still as could be while the scanner was active. The Doc had said that it would tell a lot more than normally as well as provide interactive holograms of his insides. He smiled as he thought about people who might have tried to hide things from Doctor Kij in the past. Not a chance in hell now, he thought. Then a question struck him that he wanted to ask when the scan was done and he could move.

After several moments, the machine settled back into standby mode and Jayla knew it had completed its scan. "All right," she said. "You can get up now and I'll see if I can't get this projection where it's supposed to be."

Terry slid off the bed and walked over to where Jayla was working. He was anxious to see just how this worked. Maybe if he was a good little patient he'd not only get a lollipop, but also get to play with his holographic innards.

With a flicker, a semi-transparent holographic image appeared just above the bed where the executive officer had so recently lain. All layers could be seen, including the skin, fascia, muscles, organs, brain, and nervous system. Jayla grinned, satisfied. "And here, we should be able to isolate the systems," she said, tapping buttons one by one. in turn, each system showed alone on the hologram, solid and complete. "This is awesome. Oh! Look what I just found!" she added, tapping a button. The inner ear, which was currently tiny before them, increased in size until it filled the space. "Wow! You can really see everything! Even the little hairs in the ear canal!"

"Okay," said Terry, "this is kinda creepy and kinda cool at the same time. And it zooms in on any region you want or need." He paused a second. "Could this also be used as a teaching tool?"

"Quite probably," she replied, tapping a few buttons. "Oh! That is so cool!" she added as the heart was now displayed. She watched it beat a few times. "And I think we can display.... yes! Here it is!" Superimposed over the heart was the blood pressure and beats per minute. "This thing is so cool!"

He watched and listened as the doctor continued to be amazed at the new piece of technology. It truly was a marvel of modern medicine and he was sure it would come in handy in the future. He was also glad that this little visit counted as his yearly physical. After a brief conversation, the Executive Officer excused himself and headed out for his next visit.
